We planned just one night in Saugatuck, Michigan—a quick Lake Michigan getaway that turned into one of my favorite little surprises.
Which, of course, wasn’t nearly enough.
This charming lake town has the kind of magic that sneaks up on you. It’s casual and walkable, but also a little fancy in that “freshly painted chairs on a porch with twinkle lights” kind of way. And while we didn’t have time to do everything, we squeezed in just enough to know we’ll be back… and next time, for longer.
We started the day downtown, coffee in hand, poking into shops that felt like a mix of coastal calm and Midwest quirk. A few favorites? The Brass Anchor Co., Landshark, Beach Day, and Marie’s Green Apothecary, each one with its own vibe and a friendly shopkeeper who made it way too easy to bring something home.
I couldn’t resist a few of the novelty shops either. Tuck’s of Saugatuck and Garsnett Beacon Candle Company are perfect for browsing, but Urban Found Too was the one that got me. I left with vintage milk glass for my mom’s collection and told myself it didn’t really count if it was going to someone else.
After walking the stretch of shops (and doing a little damage), we grabbed lunch at The Butler, a waterfront restaurant right on Lake Kalamazoo. If the weather’s nice, the patio is a must. It’s breezy and open-air, with a view of the sailboats that makes you forget you still have four unread texts and a to-do list back home.
That’s probably what I loved most—Saugatuck makes you slow down, without making you feel like you’re missing anything.
Just across the street from Coghlin Park, we found the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, where the summer farmers market was in full swing. Cherries, peaches, fresh flowers, handmade things—and even better, super kind people who gave us tips on where to eat, what to do, and how to stretch our time a little longer.
One of my favorite stops was American Spoon. I grabbed their Cherry Chipotle Salsa, and I’ve already used it at home: spooned over cream cheese with tortilla chips, or piled on crackers with cheese for a quick little app tray that looks much fancier than it is. They also had mocktail drink mixers I taste-tested—like a Peach Punch and Margarita Mix—both of which can be turned into simple mocktails with a splash of soda water. I passed on them in the moment, but I’ve been kicking myself ever since. They’re definitely on the list for next time.
We didn’t get to do everything—no kayaking, no dunes, no long nature views or boat rides. But maybe that’s the point. There’s still more to come back for.
Whether you’re planning a full weekend in Saugatuck or just passing through for the night, this place has a way of making you want more time.
So if you ever find yourself needing a getaway that’s simple, walkable, and full of charm… Saugatuck’s worth the detour.
