We were in the car having a full-on jam session—a real life mom moment if there ever was one.
Windows down, volume up, and me…trying to hype up my teens for the last day of school before summer break. (What a chore!)
In my mind, I was crushing it.
Giving them core memories. Bringing the energy.
Just a typical real life mom moment, right?
Then from the passenger seat, my son says,
“Mom… you’re being so Mid.”
Excuse me?
I paused the music and said, “I’m not in the Mid-dle of the road…?”
He looked at me, surprised. I could tell my question threw him off, so I kept going.
“What’s Mid? Like…is that a new phrase for ‘cool’ now?”
He started explaining it like, “You know, Mom, Mid.”
“No, son, I don’t know.”
Then he gave me that look. That sweet, patient, I love you but this is embarrassing look.
You know the kind only a teen can give.
He oh-so-kindly tried to describe the word.
I could tell he didn’t want to hurt my feelings.
But I just had to know. LOL.
So later, what do I do?
I Googled it.
And yep—turns out “Mid” means mediocre. Unimpressive.
Nothing special.
Whew. Okay. That’s… a little hard to swallow.
But here’s the thing:
He wasn’t wrong.
That morning, I probably was a little Mid.
I was hyped up, yes. But I was also in yesterday’s mascara, hair in a top knot, holding an watered-down iced coffee, and dancing to a song they stopped liking in 2019.
But I was having fun.
I was showing up.
And if that makes me Mid? Fine.
Because guess who picked them up that same day?
Still me. Their Mom.
And since I was already labeled as Mid, you better believe I rolled into that school parking lot with full commitment.
Windows down.
Blaring “School’s Out for Summer” like the DJ of my own mom moment.
They may have cringed…
But there was a smile in there too.
Life as a mom of teens?
It’s humbling.
It’s hilarious.
And yes, sometimes a little Mid.
But I’ll take Mid if it means making memories.
I’ll take Mid if it means being present.
I’ll take Mid any day of the week if it brings laughter to their hearts.
Listen, this culture moves fast.
But the love between a mother and her children?
That never goes out of style.
And neither do car jams.
